The starting position for play 2 is a funny one, as Mair never says in the German text to have the sickle pointing downwards.
We always interpret the picture as being more of a "mid-action" piece, as during sparring holding the sickle downwards as a starting position will telegraph what you are about to do way too hard.
The fact that the stances are nearly identical (par the sickle position) with the left arm below the right also played a role in our interpretation. But that is the beautiful thing about it, I think. That we can all interpret this wonderful book in different ways and still reach a satisfying conclusion.
I sometimes wish there was a physical copy of Mair's entire work in the original German.
